In all honesty, I always thought that 'Superstition' by Stevie Wonder would always be my favourite song; but 'Caramel' by Blur is up there now. Once Superstition has been your 'favourite song of all time, ever' for a good number of years you start to believe that it will never be topped, but I guess I was wrong.
Blur are my favourite band for different reasons- Damon is a truely amazing song writer, singer, front man, producer and has given us Blur, Gorillaz, The Good The Bad & The Queen and Mali Music, and Graham, Dave and Alex know how to make excellent music. Blur created britpop and changed music. I much prefer Blurs less commercial stuff, the 13 and Think Tank albums are great and are the last two albums they recorded. I would say Blur 'get better with age' and are one of the only bands whose albums seem to get better and better.
Caramel is on the 13 album (released 1999) and is just beautiful. I think it's great that the guys can record songs like Parklife or Girls and Boys but then create something as perfect as Caramel and make it work even though they are about as opposite as it can get. Breaking away from the bassy britpop 1995 anthems, Caramel is relaxed and has 'haunting' vocals, instead of Damons usual 'Parklife!' attitude towards the vocals on the tracks.
I know it's a cliche and sounds corny, but I could lye on my bed and stare at nothing while listening to Blur and not get bored because it is such a beautiful song. Most of the 13 album is about Damons split from long term girlfriend Justine from Elastica and this song is about how he has to try to get over her and better himself as a person. The 'Caramel' reference could be a metaphor for the situation- tough and sticky. 'I've got to get over' is repeated in the song- emphasising that he has to get over her to 'get better' and 'I'll love you forever' shows how emotional this song is. A love song on a whole new level. Damon is a song writing genius- Caramel is perhaps his best work.

I've gotta get over
I've gotta get over
I've got to get better
Will love you forever
I've gotta find genius
I've gotta get better
I've gotta stop smoking
I've gotta get better

Caramel Caramel...

Where is the magic?
I've gotta get better
Oh lord give me magic
I'll love you forever
I've gotta find mounts hill
And live by the mountains
I'll love you forever
You are...And you are...
