theres no nme issue over the christmas week so i was ready to get this weeks issue. i thought the end of oasis would spell the end to the endless amount of nme covers with the gallagher brothers faces plastered on them, but i was wrong. here i am sat with an nme completely filled with oasis. fourty seven consecutive pages on them to be exact.
don't get me wrong, i do like their music; 'wonderwall' was a total hit and 'the importance of being idol' never fails to make me sing along. but i just can't help but think that their albums seem to get worse, their older stuff is much much better than their newer 'up to date' material. but i just can't stand the gallaghers.
when oasis failed liam decided to bring out a clothing line. this has puzzled me from the start; liam is renowned for looking dirty, his clothes are usually dark, simple and boring and plus, he's an ass hole. who would want to take inspiration from him and put it into clothing for other people to support? if you want to see for yourselves, his clothing line can be seen here. if you want to have the look of liam gallagher, all you really have to do is not wash your clothes or about three weeks and you would have acheived it exactly.
this whole battle in the nineties of blur vs. oasis was probably interesting to those who liked the bands (i'm sure if i were sixteen in the nineties instead of now, i would be very very interested. but i can't comment on it seeing as i wasn't alive untill 1993 and have only had a deep interest in music for three or four years). obviously i would be siding with blur because they are my favourite band, but they are more flexable with what they have recorded. oasis can be seen as 'guitar indie-rock' and their albums sound pretty similar. but take blur. the 'think tank' album is so different from 'parklife' and it's poppy upbeat party songs, and then you have 'the great escape' which i suppose is an equal balance of the two and then you have another four albums to fit in there too.
sometimes i just wish nme would let other, smaller bands sneak onto the cover. i'm sure they could do with the publicity and it would help them out a hell of a lot. i'm sure just being in the magazine is sometimes not enough to get noticed.
